Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) Treatments at Hawkins Medical & Wellness in Cullman, AL

What is Hyperemesis Gravidarum?
While many women experience some nausea and vomiting in pregnancy, hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) is much more severe. HG can cause constant vomiting, dehydration, weight loss, and imbalances in important minerals (electrolytes). Without treatment, it may lead to complications for both mom and baby.

Possible Symptoms:

  • Persistent nausea and vomiting
  • Inability to keep food or fluids down
  • Weight loss greater than 5% of pre-pregnancy weight
  • Signs of dehydration (dark urine, dizziness, extreme fatigue)

Why Treatment Matters:
If not managed, HG can affect a mother’s health and the baby’s growth. Risks include nutrient deficiencies, low birth weight, and preterm delivery. Early treatment helps prevent these complications and improves outcomes for both mom and baby.

Treatment Options at Hawkins Medical & Wellness
Our team follows evidence-based guidelines to help patients feel better and stay safe during pregnancy:

  • IV fluids to correct dehydration and restore electrolytes
  • Vitamin supplementation (including thiamine) to prevent complications
  • Antinausea medications such as doxylamine-pyridoxine, metoclopramide, promethazine, or ondansetron (as appropriate)
  • Acid-reducing medications if reflux or gastritis are present
  • Close monitoring of weight, lab values, and baby’s growth throughout pregnancy

Our Approach
At Hawkins Medical & Wellness, we recognize how challenging HG can be. Our priority is to provide compassionate, individualized care that helps you stay hydrated, nourished, and supported throughout your pregnancy.
